Born Joseph de Veuster in Belgium in 1840, St. Damien famously volunteered to serve the quarantined leper colony on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. He didn't just minister to the residents; he lived among them, built their houses, and eventually contracted the disease himself. He famously began his sermons with "We lepers," signifying his total union with those he served. His life remains one of the world's greatest examples of heroic charity and the "Apostle of the Outcasts."
