Devotional History: Born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf on May 8, 1828, in Bekaa Kafra, Lebanon, St. Charbel lived a life of severe asceticism, silent prayer, and deep Eucharistic devotion as a Maronite monk and hermit at the Monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya. Following his death on December 24, 1898, a brilliant light emanated from his tomb for 45 days, and his body remained incorrupt and exuding a miraculous fluid of oil and water for decades. Canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1977, the "Miracle Monk of Annaya" has tens of thousands of documented healings attributed to his heavenly intercession, making him one of the most beloved patrons for impossible medical cures.
