Biographical: Born October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy. Maria lived a life of deep faith and hard work in a poor farming family. At age 11, she was mortally wounded while defending her purity. In her final hours, she made the heroic choice to forgive her attacker, Alessandro Serenelli, expressing her desire to see him in Heaven. Her extraordinary act of mercy led to Alessandro’s eventual repentance and conversion. She was canonized on June 24, 1950, by Pope Pius XII in a ceremony attended by her own mother and her forgiven attacker.
